Dog Days of Summer

Going back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the term “Dog Days of Summer” has been used to describe the period between late July and early September – a time when Sirius, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (the greater dog) rises near the sun.  It is also when we usually have our hottest and most humid weather.

In the labor market, this is a time when things typically heat up as well. Many government and non-profit clients have the start of their fiscal year, while private sector companies are getting into Q3 and mid-year staff and business evaluations.  They are also planning for open enrollment, vacation or leave coverage, and even preparing for back to school with fewer interns available.

In a market already filled with uncertainty, this time of year can add a LOT of heat and stress to teams of employees who are already feeling the pressure of “doing more with less” over the last couple of years. It is a great time to see what is available…
